Artist Statement

My work delves into the relationship between nature and mythology, where reality and fantasy collide. It highlights and elevates ordinary, sometimes-hated animals to show them with a refreshed sense of wonder. Legendary creatures, meanwhile, can be depicted as those aforementioned ordinary animals. In the world of my art, you could find a common dove worshipped like a god and a dragon kept like a housecat in the same city.

A huge inspiration behind this art is ecology and public perception of it. I see things differently than others- one time, while fawning over a salamander I found in the woods, a hiker stopped by and remarked how it looked gross, like a worm. I find a lot of joy in showcasing the beauty of the "ugly" and glorifying the mundane. It's such a fun way to look at the world.

Most of the time, my style is tied to realism; I strive to depict every beast, fantastic or ordinary, as close to how they would look in real life. Speculative biology comes into play for the mythological ones- how could a dragon spit fire? How large would the wings have to be to support it in flight? And so on... Other times, I let myself play like a child and simply create what my heart desires. Anxiety and overthinking has been a huge, detrimental part of my life, so it feels like taking back some power to give myself the freedom to make art without dwelling on it so much.
